I have chosen to deconstruct Ready For Your Love-Gordon City
feat.MNEK. Firstly I chose this song as the artist produces dance music which
is similar to our chosen track. Also from what I have observed so far, majority
of dance music uses a fast cutting rate through out majority of the video, so
when finding a track to analyse I went against the ordinary and picked a video
which had a slower cutting rate at times.
Slow-motion was used very frequently throughout the video I think it made the movement from dancing and skateboarding look very interesting and caught my attention when watching.
From the technical deconstruction I have learnt a lot about
cutting rate. For example for this video in particular the cutting rate was
significantly slower at the start of the song. The first 30 seconds of the
music video only had 10 shots. Where as later on in the video, 30 seconds into the
chorus there are 20 shots. This means that the cutting rate has doubled. Also
from this we know that in the chorus there is more than one shot for every
second of the video. I knew that dance music included fast cutting rates but I
didn’t appreciate the actual speed.
Also what I noticed
when analysing the fast cutting rate in the chorus is that consecutive shots aren’t
necessarily of different things. So the chorus includes a lot of jump cuts and
shots that are the same but either closer or further away from the subject
being filmed. Therefore each shot doesn’t need to be a new location or scene.
This means that when we begin to storyboard our video every shot won’t have to
be a different location/scene.
Another aspect I was analysing was the amount of movement in
each shot. Majority of the shots had movement in them, even if It was a very
subtle tracking in shot it still included movement. I noticed one shot which
was completely still however movement was still created through dancing. Other
then that most shots had slow pans tracking shots or movement from using hadi
cams and stedi cams.
Also I noticed that when shots used handi cam, slow-motion was
added to make the movement more fluid and smooth rather than jerky. This made
the video look more professional.
Slow-motion was used very frequently throughout the video I think it made the movement from dancing and skateboarding look very interesting and caught my attention when watching.
As well I noticed the fact that they repeatable went back to
similar shots. For example they repeatably went back to this crowd of dancers
throughout the video:
And also a character dancing at a skatepark:
And also a character dancing at a skatepark:
The repeatability of similar shots meant that the audience
saw a small narrative as these shots progressed and developed. I was almost
like multiple lines of action were happening through out the video.
Lighting is used to make the artists in the video look
appealing. For example lighting coming from above high lighted their bone
structures and brought out their features.
Coloured lighting was used in the club and when the artist was miming.
Also flashing lights were used in the club to create an exciting atmosphere.
I thought that the use of a plain background when we saw the
artist mime was very clever as it meant that all of the audiences attention was
focused on him. Also I noticed that the artists were constantly placed in the
middle of the frame rather than adhering to the rule of thirds. This also would
make the audience pay more attention to the artist as they are directly drawn
to them.
As we are going to have a miming aspect in our video I think using a plain background and placing the lead singer in the centre of the shot would be very effective.
Excellent technical observations the idea of breaking rule of third for first person mode of address is conventional in videos, can have strong visual impact when intercut with a narrative framed in a different way
