In the lesson today we were asked to look at a particular aspect of this music video, Carpark North- Human. I looked at the Representation which is portrayed throughout the video:
- The youth is represented as careless and reckless especially in the shots where the two boys are throwing chocolate milkshake over each other. It's a stereotypical view that children, especially little boys will make mess like this, and are wild
- The shot where the boy is flexing his muscles and tensing his arms is represents the dominant ideology that boys/men are expected to be muscly and strong, and therefore this little boy is attempting to be this way.
- The little girls break the stereotypes with their costumes and long ratty hair. They are dressed as Tom Boys and you wouldn't except this in a music video as little girls are usually portrayed with makeup and blonde hair.
- It's also set in a school which is stereotypical of youth.
I think your analysis that the dominant ideology that men are always expected to be strong is very interesting. Maybe we could challenge this dominant ideology by highlighting a more emotional side to our main male character.
