A.M Deconstruction of a digipak

Genre

Clean Bandit are a dance artist. This album consists of mostly electronic dance music. This is obvious due to it following genre characteristics, such as the use of digital and electronic sounds created on computers and synthesizersThe genre of the track is suggested through the visuals on the album cover. due to the use of editing and illusions on the album cover it connotes the electronic, computerised and synthesized sound of their music. However the use of images of natural plants represent their organic and natural talent which they have, and their use of classical instruments.

There use of classical instruments is evident in their other advertisement where they show images of their string instruments. Their use of classical instruments is very iconic and this is why their posters focus on this aspect.

-Heavily edited album covers are very conventional for the electronic dance music album covers. They aren't usually simplistic.

- On this album cover and poster voyeurism isn't used. Voyeurism is not conventionally used in electronic advertisement. This challenges the social stereotype that artists are promoted in their videos through 'soft porn' and fetishism.

Media Language

There album cover is very unique in the fact it is very unconventional as doesn't follow certain visual techniques. For example the rule of thirds isn't used for the band members on the digipak artwork. This could potentially make consumers think harder and focus more on the image as it can't be visually consumed that easily. The album cover is very visually interesting and confusing enticing the audience. The intricacy of the design is mesmerising and unique. They have used very earthy muted tones and colours on their digipack and advertisement. The greens and browns create a very natural look which is iconic for the band.

The main focus of the album cover is the four simple shapes. They include all of these shapes in their videos and is their meta-narrative.  These symbols are also included in their music videos. Therefore when we see these symbols the audience can quickly identify the artist without even having to read a title.

The artist on the digipak is positioned far away and eye contact with the camera isn't made. Therefore the forth wall isn't broken. This therefore reinforces dyers theory of the paradoxes that artists are present and absant at the same time.

This digipack doesn't have any emotive language or quotations from the artist or other sources. It doesn't even have the artists name.

Another iconic sign is the use of simple shapes which are present in the middle of the video. This acts as a signifier in recognising the band.  This uncertainty leads to an incomplete star image, which fans of the artist will seek to try and complete by purchasing the record, therefore creating repeatability (Dyer).

Representation
band/artist represented?

If we apply  Dyer’s structure of the Paradox's we can tell that the band appears as ordinary and extraordinary. In plain simple clothing without drastic hair and make-up. This makes them very relatable and organic looking, showcasing their raw and natural talent.

The band are effortlessly talented this is shown through their use of locations.

They always choose to film outdoors and utilise what is around them rather than being in a studio.  If we apply  Dyer’s structure of the Paradox's we can tell that the band appears as ordinary and extraordinary. This is shown by the use of natural locations and the natural appearance of the band contrasted with their extraordinary talent. This  acts as a signifier that challenges the social myth that an artist's extraordinary.
