D.B: Lonely Boy Evaluation - Class Music Video

1) We used a range of camera angles in the video in order to experiment for our finished coursework video and connote certain emotions and views of the band. For example we used a MS of our heads poking round the door to see how it would look.

In certain parts of the video the cutting rate has an illustrative relationship with the music for example at the beginning of the video the cutting rate is in time with the beat of the music to connect the audience with the upbeat, joyous mood of the song. Throughout the entirety of the music video however has a general amplified relationship between visuals and music in order to create an interesting narrative as well as relating to the music. One group decided to layer over clips of characters playing musical instrument on a field whilst continuing the narrative of the main singer walking across the field. This was used to add an interesting effect on the video and give the artist a uniqueness that could be used for the band's meta narrative, to sell the track and captivate the audience. The interesting nature of this effect also added to the repeatability factor of the music video which is described by Steve Archer as a very important aspect of a music video.

Mise-en-scene was used to give the band a specific image. The Black Keys is an American Rock band and we decided to follow the genre characteristics that this genre of music is often associated with, thought of as a key theme throughout all music videos by Goodwin (Dancing in the Distraction Factory, 1992). During the scene that my group created we wore sunglasses and punk rock clothes and the costume throughout the entire video is quite similar. The tempo of the song is upbeat and invokes an exuberant emotion, to imitate this in a visual sense high key lighting was used to create synaesthesia and connect the visual emotions with the aural. In order to follow Dyer's structure of the paradox's and create a perception that the band is both ordinary and extraordinary the location used was a school because it meant the audience could connect with the familiar situations. Non-verbal language was used to promote the band as stereotypically associated with rebellion and aggression for example when the three band members walked into the hall with the band copying them, the two groups broke into a fight.

There was a narrative fuzz during the video specifically near the end when the image cut from the main singer performing on the grass with a microphone to him walking up to girl sitting under a tree.

2) I would give my future self advise to definitely focus on creating a detailed and relevant storyboard because whilst filming the class video it was incredibly helpful to understand how long each shot was meant to be and where the narrative was going to lead. The storyboard made editing a lot easier as well because we knew what order to put the shots even if we hadn't filmed then in that specific order.
