D.B: Monday 15th September Lesson

In the lesson we were asked to watch this video and consider one of the point on deconstructing a music video from either the Media Language Section or Representation. I considered what the 'message' or purpose of the video:
  • Quirky children are displaying their talents and ignoring the fact that they may be judged for looking or dressing slightly different to the majority. They are talented, energetic and confident kids that are in a stereotypical American high school. Stereotypically these children are assumed to be the kids that are bullied for being different and the video is inspiring to see them owning their differences and displaying their energy with pride.
  • Dyer claims that there needs to be star quality displayed in the video and although the band do not feature in it they are still being associated in a certain portrayal from the actions within the video. The band is associated with rebellion and anger to create an anti-authoritarian attitude conventional of the rock genre of the song.
  • The video is created to go with the lyrics "you're just human" and to prevent people from judging others simply because they are different from the majority. The video portrays a sense of uncaring about societal values and constructions with a creative and quirky twist.
